I am starting to wonder whatever happened to "creativity" in Tamil cinema.A majority of the recent flicks seems to be an out and out copy of Hollywood movies. To list a few,
1.Deiva thirumagal- Now this movie is a remake of the Sean Penn starrer "I am Sam",The director of the movie Vijay has copied each and every detail including the costume and hairstyles of the protagonist of the latter movie. But,when the reporters asked him about the resemblances of the two movies,He denied the fact and stated that his movie was a work of his own and He hadn't copied it.Now does he think that the audiences are idiots??I don't think there's anything wrong in getting inspired by a movie and trying to incorporate it in another script. But copying a movie as it is and trying to get credits for the work is Shameful.
2.Kho - I would say this has been "inspired" by the Hollywood flick "State of play" starring Russell Crowe and Ben affleck. The reason i use the term "inspired" is that though both the stories revolves around the press and politics and their effects on one another. The stories seems to be quite different.
3.Muran - This one's copied from the Alfred Hitchcock movie"Strangers on a train".!!the director has gone little back in time,it was a movie released in 1950's!!
4.Aadugalam - The director has openly stated that he had made the movie after watching "Amores perros" a mexican movie not to forget his debut "Pollathavan" was a copy of "Bicycle thieves" a popular Italian movie...
I 've mentioned only a few movies here actually the list runs for pages...!!
I don't wanna finish this list without a Special mention about Gowtham menon,One of the popular directors in the recent times, who to me is a culprit. All of his movies so far happen to be "ditto's" of hollywood movies,To mention a few"Nadunisi naaigal" is a copy of The famous hollywood movie "Psycho", "Vinnaithaandi varuvaaya" - Was copied from the Hollywood movie"500 days of summer","Vettaiyadu villayadu" - Sandra bullock starrer,"Murder by numbers"...Plagiarism is there not only in movies but in movie songs too..The music directors lift a tune and use it in their songs, its like a karoke in the end!!!To list a few,
Vijay Antony's-"Unakenna Naan" is a copy of Rihanna's"Unfaithful",Harris jeyaraj's "Karu karu vizhigalal" is a copy of Westlife's "Hit you with the real thing",Joshua Sridar's "Oru Devathai veesidum paarvaiyile" is a copy of Daniel Beddingfield's "He don't love you like I do" Those are just a few of the many copy cat songs...!!
Plagiarism is one of the reasons why i have no regard for tamil movies or songs. These people need to evolve. They are just running around in circles.I think what they do is (like my English teacher use to say..)"put their brains in their freezers!!" ,take four or five Dvds of movies which are box-office hits and pick one to make a tamil movie or in some cases blend more than one movie together to make a tamil movie, same applies to songs!!!This isn't good for the "directors!".With the advent of the internet and piracy, people are getting to watch a lot of foreign language films and are listening to a wide range of songs...It won't be long before you are stripped of your honors - Directors and Music Directors of "Kollywood"it's high time, you wake up and respond to the changes....

hehehe you are so right...cinema has become a commercial venture, a product with a market, rather than a work of art
ReplyDeleteaadukalam and polladhavan are not copies! Aadukalam is not a copy of Amores Perros, by checking IMDB and reading the summaries of both movies you will know that they are wildly apart.
ReplyDeletePolladhavan does have the theft of the bike as an important plot point but the movie is wildly different after that. In Bicycle Thief - Ricci, an unemployed man in the depressed post-WWII economy of Italy, gets at last a good job - for which he needs a bike - hanging up posters. But soon his bicycle is stolen. He and his son walk the streets of Rome, looking for the bicycle. Ricci finally manages to locate the thief but with no proof, he has to abandon his cause. But he and his son know perfectly well that without a bike, Ricci won't be able to keep his job.
Polladhavan is a typical masala movie and is entirely different but the part where the main characters' bike is stolen is the only similarity. I would call that a homage and not plagiarism.
@edwin first of all thank u for taking time to comment on my post...
DeleteWell! I've watched the movie "Amores Perros". I found many similarities between it and "Aadugalam". Just like how the movie "aadugalam" revolves around Cock-fighting, One plot (this movie depicts the life of 4-5 different ppl and their relationship with their dogs ) of the movie Amores Perros revolves around dog fighting. The protagonist of that plot owns a Rottweiler dog which wins every dog fight match it's put into and he gets good money with the help of the dog and then later gets into trouble....I hope now u'll agree with what I said...!
Homage?!!! Pollathavan is a blatant copy.. come on! u urself described the plot of "Bicycle thief"... dhanush also gets a job with the help of the bike and then when the bike s stolen he gets into trouble. Some minor changes have been done to suit Tamil audiences like he finds his bike later ,fights with the villain and finally walks out with pride..other than that it's a copy .
I've watched "Bicycle thief" too...! it's a verrryyy old movie but thanx to torrentz.. I downloaded it from ther...
